 What is Manuka Honey?

The Manuka flower blooms for about six-weeks in January. Manuka is a pure, raw, un- pasteurized honey. Bees add an enzyme called glucose oxidase during honey production which helps in the formation of hydrogen peroxide, and acts as an antiseptic and antibiotic. Manuka honey is unique because it has antibacterial qualities above the hydrogen peroxide action of regular honey.

What does Manuka Honey taste like?

The taste of Manuka is probably an acquired one. Some say that Manuka honey although sweet, has a slight medicinal taste, others notice hints of eucalyptus or a woodsy aroma. Mixing a tablespoon of the honey with warm water or tea is helpful in treating a sore throat, cough, cold or flu symptoms, and for covering an unpleasant flavour.

What are Manuka Honey Nutrition Facts?

What makes Manuka honey different is its amazing nutritional profile. Regular raw honey is already known for its nutritional and immune boosting abilities. However, the nutritional content of Manuka honey is 4x higher in Amino acids, B vitamins (B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, and pantothenic acid), Calcium, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, and Zinc; this quality is measured in the Unique Manuka Factor.

What is the Unique Manuka Factor?

Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) is the traditional worldwide standard in measuring the antibacterial strength or quality of some strains of Manuka. It is a guarantee that the honey being sold has the special UMF antibacterial property, a UMF rating of 10 is the minimum recognized. Ordinary Manuka has only the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property, like other honey, where UMF Manuka has both the natural hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property and its own natural UMF antibacterial property; giving it increased antibacterial strength. The UMF property is very stable, unlike the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property which is easily destroyed by heat, light and certain enzymes.

What is MGO and the Methylglyoxal rating?

The newest rating system is the MGO or Methylglyoxal rating. Methylglyoxal is a unique naturally occurring antibacterial agent not found in any other honey. Research has shown methylglyoxal is effective against most forms of bacteria, including the very resistant helicobacter pylori (causes most stomach ulcers) and staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Manuka Health have adopted this new method, and their products are classified by either Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum.

How do you use Manuka Honey?

External - Amount of honey placed on wound will vary on amount of liquid the wound exudes. More fluid means that the dressing will have to be changed more often as honey will be diluted. (Up to 3-5x daily for the first few days).

Internal - Take on an empty stomach or with carbohydrates (no protein) - 1 tsp 3x/day. To experience the most benefit, you should take a dose of about 1-2 tablespoons of Manuka honey a day. The easiest way is to just take it straight, but if it is a little too sweet for you, then you can add it to your favorite herbal tea, over yogurt, or on sprouted grain toast.

Are there any side effects to Manuka Honey?

Manuka Honey should be taken and used with caution if you are allergic to bees due to possible allergic side effects. Report any adverse reactions to your natural health care provider immediately.
